Marguerite Dyson

Marguerite Dyson lived on Holloway Street in downtown St. John’s and had a place in the life of the Women’s Centre, known to many as a volunteer and as a friend.

When Marguerite’s was murdered, at age 51, in an unsafe, run-down boarding house, SJSWC began to research housing needs for women in St. John’s and across the province.

Through the experiences of Marguerite and others who shared their experiences in conversation with us, in 1997 SJSWC decided to make housing a greater focus of our work.  Research has shown that in St. John’s and surrounding areas, the needs of single women, particularly for those over the age of thirty seeking women-only housing, are not being met by existing housing programs.

Today, after more than a decade of involvement in research, lobbying, and province-wide organizing on the issue of women’s housing, SJSWC is building a facility where we can expand our housing supports, and honour the memory of Marguerite’s life.

Marguerite, I sound your name

in case some have already forgotten your battle

in the bustle that continues below us

a man balances a tight rope of barbed wire

pours concrete for a parking garage

where another woman's home used to be
