Herstory

Newfoundland Status of Women Council

For more than thirty years St. John’s Status of Women Council (SJSWC) has carried out research and spoken out on issues impacting women. Incorporated in 1972 as the Newfoundland Status of Women Council, in 1984 the organization was renamed St. John’s Status of Women Council.

Iris Kirby House and NL Sexual Assault Crisis & Prevention Centre

SJSWC brought forward Iris Kirby House (a local shelter for women fleeing domestic violence), as well as the Newfoundland & Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis & Prevention Centre (formerly Rape Crisis Centre). While these two initiatives now operate as independent organizations, we remain closely affiliated.

St. John’s Women’s Centre

We also brought forth the St. John’s Women’s Centre, now an independent organization partnering with SJSWC in the development of our new facility. Together SJSWC and the Women’s Centre operated out of our original location on Military Road for thirty years. In 2006 we relocated our offices and programming to a new, temporary location on LeMarchant Road to accommodate our expanding programs and growing participation.

While our current home on LeMarchant Road has improved our service delivery,

the space is not fully accessible, nor is there enough space to provide the

supportive services that are clearly needed in our community.

Our existing affordable housing units are also not fully accessible.

Marguerite’s Place

Our new facility, Marguerite’s Place , currently being constructed, will provide full accessibility to all participants, residents and staff in terms of the physical design as well as the necessary social supports available to women. This will enhance our ability to foster equality and empowerment of all women.
